Happy Easter!! I thought today would be a wonderful day to kick off a new feature at The Hub, our Creative Team Spotlights. I know that it's probably pretty obvious who the ScrapArtist Creative Goddesses are from the gallery...but wouldn't it be nice to know a little bit more about them?
This week I spoke with the smart, talented and very sweet Lisa Howell, aka Vania16. I asked her some questions, asked for some tips and pointers and hope you enjoy her answers as much as I did.
1. I know you've been
at this scrapping thing for a while now, do you remember what your 'aha' moment
was, when digital really clicked for you?
Well, honestly, I loved it right away LOL! I had only been paper
scrapping for a few months when I stumbled onto the world of digital. I started
out using Memory Mixer software, which was pretty easy to understand and right
away I loved what digital allowed me to do. But, I will say that I definitely
had an aha moment after I switched over to Photoshop. I struggled with it for
the first several days - just trying to figure out how to get an element onto my
page! I finally went out and bought the Photoshop Bible and started reading -
once I figured out what layers were all about, it really started to click!
Since then I've had several other moments like that, when I learn a new
technique and a whole new avenue of creation opens up - that's one of the best
parts of digital for me I think!
2. Is there a layout in
your collective body of work that you look at now and say it's the layout that
has defined or set the tone for your current style?
I think it was probably this layout of our best friends' son Sy . . .
Balance
Although my style has evolved from there, this was the first layout that I
felt really told a story and really expressed something about life. I think up
until then I hadn't looked at the process in quite that way and it really
changed my approach.
3. Do you have a tip or
trick that you use frequently that you could share with us?
Well, I love using alphas, so I often use "allign layers" to help me line
them up. I put all the letters into an empy document, space them
out horizontally, then lock the layers and click "allign layers" in the tool
bar. It lines them up perfectly for you! And, one of my favorite techniques is
using blend modes, which I talked about at length in the Digital Brew here on
the Hub a few weeks ago.
4. Describe your
typical process when creating something...photo first? Idea first? Journaling
first?
Honestly it's different for me every time. Sometimes I have a fantastic
photo that I just have to scrap, other times I have a particular story that I
want to tell so I start with that (and I'll even use stock photos to tell it
from time to time!), and on other occasions I have a particular kit I want to
use so I start there! Once I've settled on all the pieces I want to use,
however, my process is pretty much always the same. I position my photos and
decide where the focal point of the layout will be, then I work with my papers
to create the "bones" of the design, finally I add my elements to highlight the
focal point and accent the design. Last, but certainly not least, I add my
title and journaling if there is any - sometimes it's just a date, other times
it's more of a story, I'm not one who thinks every layout needs a ton of
journaling, sometimes the photo tells the story just right :)
5. Advice you'd give
someone new or starting out in digital would be:
My best advice is just to try lots of new
things, play around as much as you can and really get to know your program.
Like anything in life, digital takes a lot of trial and error - but at least
with digital you have an undo button :)
And finally, the fun
bonus question: You've been given a guest spot on a TV show...which one and why?
I'm going to have to say Lost - I'll play Sawyer's new girlfriend ;) I'll
be totally omniscient and know exactly what's going on with that stupid island!
That way I can figure out what that show's about once and for all LOL!
I encourage you to browse
Lisa's ScrapArtist Gallery for beautiful page ideas and inspirational use of Scrapartist Products, as always, if you ever have any questions for the ScrapArtist Creative Team, feel free to use the Private Message feature through the forums or gallery!
P.S. I'll leave you with some eye candy in the form of some of Lisa's own favorite pages from her albums!
