It's all about the little things...

Right from the start, when I first started scrapping, I have always loved making things in miniature. I love being able to create little pieces of art and mementoes to carry around with me in my handbag or display in a little corner of a room.

If you take a look at our Hybrid Gallery, you will see all sorts of mini – albums. Here are a few that I really love.

Our Hybrid Goddess,Eva has created this sweet mini-album with last month’s colab kit ‘In Bloom’. She has made some wonderful templates and a little bird tells me that these will soon be available here at Scrapartist!

Jackie_collage

Cathy created this beautiful little album using Amber Clegg's L'il Dainty Quick Page album

Tendermomentshybridalbum2

Anna made this sweet CD album with her fab Eight in 08 cd album, QP album

Annarussell_eightin08_cdalbumprevie

I have made a star shaped mini-album, filled with pictures of my 2 girls. This album really was easy peasy. I used Nancie’s Shmootzy Fames Vol. 2 to create simple clean layouts that really dressed up some ‘not-so-great’ photos taken on my mobile. I added  an ‘old paper’ effect in Photoshop Elements 5, to further enhance my b&w pics.

Hybrid Challenge: Inking the Edges

Hi there, Denise here with a new Hybrid Challenge for you, let's Ink the Edges!

When you run an ink pad along the edges of your card or layout, it can add a bit of definition to the edges, add a touch of color, or really pop a shape. There are lots of ink pad brands and colors at your local craft store, scrapbook store or Michaels. You'll want to look for Acid Free Ink.

We've shown a few of the popular brands to ink the edges of our cards. The Ranger Distress Inks are great for adding a slight coloring to the edges, the Antique Linen color adds a slight tan (my favorite). Pigment inks will give you opaque coverage, great to use with darker colors or bold colors. The Chalk Inks will look a bit softer, more transparent when dry. The smaller ink pads are perfect for getting into smaller corners, such as cut-outs.

Here's my card using the Ranger Distress Ink (Antique Linen).

Here's Hybrid Goddess Eva's card using a black ColorBox Chalk Ink.

Here's my card using some VersaMagic Chalk Ink.

You will have until April 7 to complete your card, upload your project to the gallery and we will pick the winner the next Monday. You can win a 5 dollar gift certificate for the shoppe, so join us! Participants in this challenge will need to use at least 50% ScrapArtist products to be eligible. Please note, this challenge will not be apart of the March Madness Contest.

Have fun inking your edges! :)

Happy Hybrid Monday!

Happy Monday everyone!

This week Nisha is our hybrid guest.  She is such an inspiration to so many of us.  If you haven't experienced Nisha's gallery, here is a link:  http://www.scrapartist.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=1449

Nisha created this amazing card holder to showcase her daughter, Zahra's, birthday cards.  She is going to put this in her room with little pegs to hold some bigger butterflies once her birthday month is over.  What a wonderful idea, Nisha!  Thanks for sharing your time and talent with us!

Happy Hybrid Monday!

Happy Hybrid Monday everyone!

We have such a treat for you this week.  The amazing Audrey Neal is our guest hybrid scrapper this month!  She has thought of the greatest idea too!  If you have always wanted to do a hybrid project, but felt overwhelmed with the challenge...this is the week to give it a try.  Audrey challenged us to do a project using iron-on transfer paper, sticker paper, magnet paper, etc.  I have to admit, I was a little nervous at the thought of doing something like this...definitely out of my comfort zone (lol).  I went to our local Michael's store, and was shocked to see all the different types of transfer papers they had.  They offer tons of ideas too.  Here is a short bio of the super-talented Audrey Neal, along with her amazing projects:

Photo_for_bio_2

Hi! My name is Audrey Neal, and I live in western Kentucky, with my
husband of 7 years, Chris, and our daughters Cassidy (10) and Cameron
(5). Although I’ve scrapped since 2000, I didn’t become serious about
the design aspect of it all until October 2005; I jumped in with both
feet and haven’t looked back. Since that time, I’ve been honored to
design and write for a number of magazines and manufacturers. In the
past year, I started digital scrapbooking as well and love to combine
traditional and digital elements on my pages. I have a book on hybrid
scrapbooking (co-written with May Flaum) that will be released by Memory
Makers in January '08. I also sell my own digital designs at
www.oscraps.com. When I’m not creating, I love to read, watch movies
(and catch up on my favorite TV shows via Netflix -- which means I’m
always a few seasons behind!), listen to music, and just spend time
goofing off with friends and family.

Here are Audrey's fantastic project ideas:

Scrapartist_adore_lo

The little 6x12 layout on the scalloped cardstock uses sticker paper.
Paper scrappers have to use glue or Mod Podge or other messy stuff to
cover their chipboard (or boxes, frames, etc) with paper. Digi scrappers
should just print onto sticker paper, trace the shape, cut, peel, and
stick. It works BEAUTIFULLY! Really simple stuff here -- but I love this
photo and really wanted to highlight it. Supplies: Bazzill cardstock,
ink, papers from Reverie kit, Fancy Pants chipboard, Sharpie marker.

Scrapartist_calendar_1

This project is just a fun little magnet calendar I made for
Cassidy's locker. The background is a piece of paper from the Chirpy
Days collab printed onto magnet paper (I always use the glossy paper so it doesn't
alter the colors). Then I printed some of the Two Sisters calendar pages
onto the patterned paper from the kit, printed some embellies too, and put it
all together. It's roughly 5x7...

Scrapartistbagmainimage_2

Scrapartistbagdetail

Supplies:
one canvas bag
selection of buttons
embroidery floss and good sturdy needle
acrylic paint
transfer paper
digital kit/elements of your choice: Weeds and Wildflowers' Going in Circles, quote and grid paper from Journalique collaborative kit, Schmootzy Frames by Nancie Rowe Janitz

A few notes:
My project used 16 nickel or quarter-sized buttons from Autumn Leaves.
The canvas is really thick, so you'll need a sturdy needle BUT you'll also need to make sure your needle will fit through all your buttons.
Make sure to follow all the manufacturer's instructions when you are using iron-on transfers or other speciality products.

To create the digital image:
1. Open a new Photoshop document, 11x8.5, 300 dpi, transparent background.
2. Open the grid paper from the kit, drop it onto your file, and resize as needed.
3. Open a variety of paper circles and stitches from the Weeds and Wildflowers element pack. I arranged mine so that I have 5 circles across and 3 tall. I interspersed the stitches with the paper circles and resized everything until I was happy with the arrangement.
4. Open the word art from the Journalique kit and drag it on top of the circles and stitches. Resize until it covers the circle elements. To make sure that the quote would show up against the busy background, I duplicated it two or three times and then merged those layers. This thickened / darkened it up so that it stood out more against the background.
5. Open grungy frames and drag on top of grid paper. Resize as needed. Change blend mode to overlay. Combine more than one frame or experiment with blend modes until you are satisfied.

To print:
*Printing can be kind of tricky, depending on what kind of transfers you purchase and what kind of printer you have. Again, let me stress that it's important to read all the manufacturer's directions clearly before you begin.
*First of all, you need to find out if your printer has a t-shirt transfer setting. If it does, this means that it will automatically flip the image for you. If it doesn't, you'll need to flip the image yourself (just merge your layers and choose "flip horizontal" in Photoshop).
*Secondly, you'll need to be aware of the type of iron-on transfer you are using. If you are using transfers for LIGHT FABRICS, then you will want your image to be flipped before printing. If your printer does this for you, then you are set. Simply click print and then let the image dry completely. If your printer doesn't have a transfer setting, then flip the image yourself in your photo-editing software, print, and let dry.  If you are using transfers for DARK FABRICS, you do not want your image to be flipped. If your printer automatically flips images to print for transfers, then you will need to flip your image before printing.

A note concerning DARK FABRIC transfers. These print on a white background. Of course you can add your own background and then trim around it, but if you have a free-standing design, then I suggest using the regular transfers for a less visible background.

To complete the project:
1. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for ironing the transfer onto your fabric project.
2. Embellish with buttons (attached with embroidery thread) along top border.
3. Finish by flicking paint around edges of design with an old toothbrush.

I told you she is amazing!  Here are the projects Jenn, Linda, and I came up with:

HYBRID CHALLENGE MONDAY with guest LISA MOOREFIELD

I'm so excited about our guest today! Lisa Moorefield (aka, Lemonade Stand) is not only a friend, but an amazing artist. But get this, she is not a digi or hybrid scrapper! She is a paper and paste girl. When I asked her to join us this month, she was happy to take on the challenge. And as it turns out, she is a natural with the digi stuff! I asked Lisa to tell us a bit about herself,  "I was a perfectly content quilter-turned-scrapbooker for six years. Then I discovered the joy of creating my own books and journals using Photoshop & digital elements. I especially like to create children's stories using scans of my children's writings and artwork, then print them on the back of patterned cardstock, and bind them together with ribbon to make a wonderful short story book." Hee hee. Nothing like getting another scrapper addicted to digi... Lisa also has two adorable kids (6 year old girl and a 4 year old boy), and does the most amazing sewing jobs on her pages.

Her challenge to us was to create a mini album. But Lisa made two! Woohoo! Bonus. The first one is this adorable Travel Journal.

Travel_journal___side_view

Travel_journal___cover___inside_2

Details and instructions for this album (from Lisa):

ScrapArtist Supplies:
Painted Doodles Stars Vol. 1 (Lisa Whitney)
Little Explorers Elements (Diane Rigdon)
Postage Date Stamps (Amber Clegg)
Teacher's Pet Alpha (Lauren Reid)
Chalked Full of Fun Doodles (Lisa Whitney)
Mark That Date (Two Sisters Designs)
Celebrating Color: Wonderfully White Papers (Weeds & Wildflowers)

This 2-up photo album works really well for a kids' travel/summer journal. The beginning pages contain a summer calendar, a packing checklist, a U.S. map, a scavenger hunt and other travel games. When the journal is opened, there are four 4x6 spaces that hold items for one destination. Before going on a trip, I include a map, a journaling page (kids can draw a picture or write what their favorite part of the trip was), a blank page with a few surprise stickers and/or scrapbooking supplies tucked in.  I also let the kids take some photos and later choose one or two to place in their album.

Cover:
Fold the cardstock to fit over the photo album (I had to use 2 pieces of cardstock to make it long enough). Sew or glue the 2 pieces together.  Attach a piece of elastic using brads (I used BasicGrey elastic ribbon).  Glue or sew the cover to the album, or make it removable using elastic or ribbon.

Pages:
For each page, I opened a 6x4 page with a white background in Photoshop, and added various elements.  When I added the ledger & grid paper backgrounds (Wonderfully White), I changed the opacity to about 50%.

Her next album is this clever Medical Records Book. I am so going to make one of these! What a handy (and pretty) way to keep all that information close by.

Medical_journal

And here is the info:

ScrapArtist Supplies:
Horizons Classic Planner Templates (Diane Rigdon)
Horizons Basic Scraps Collection (Diane Rigdon)
Celebrating Color: Wonderfully White Papers (Weeds & Wildflowers)
Postage Date Stamps (Amber Clegg)

This $1 photo album is very handy for keeping track of kids' records and other info like the pediatrician's phone number, insurance information, a growth chart, baby teeth record, info for babysitters, immunization record, medical history, allergies, and a current photo. The cover is made using one of the Wonderfully White papers and a birthday postage date stamp.  For the inside pages, I made a few changes to some Horizons planner pages and reduced the size.

WOW! So we (the hybrid team) were challenged. :) And here is what we came up with:

Kathy created this gorgeous book to record her daughter Carly's many National Dance competitions. What a great keepsake!

Hybrid_journal

Jenn made this cool accordian album album a trip she took with her kids to Canada. This is such a quick way to record family trips. You could make one for each of your trips and keep them together in a box!

Jo_july_hybrid

For more info on Jenn's album, click here.

And I loved Lisa's Travel Journal so much, I decided to create one for my two older boys. They are going to visit their grandparents this summer (by themselves), and I thought it would be fun to give them a book to record the details of the trip and a disposable camera to take photos. This is also great for me! Otherwise all I hear when I ask them questions is, "I forgot."

Well, I hope you were inspired to make a little album for yourself, family, or friends. So go out there, create, and print! See you next month with our next guest challenge!

June Hybrid project

Happy Monday everyone!

We are happy to introduce Amy Hutchinson, she is our guest hybrid scrapper for the month of June.  We asked her to tell us a little about herself....I'm a Southern girl who longs for sun and sand, and the perfect cocktail! I live in Memphis, TN (the music capital of the world!) with my hubby of 11 years, 3 beautiful girls, and a rambunctious little boy. I graduated college with a 4.0 in Biology, but I have given up goals of grad school in lieu of motherhood. I couldn't be happier with my choice, and I continue to be awed by the challenges it presents on a daily basis! I discovered digital scrapbooking by accident when searching for a way to share family photos online. Although I have done a small amount of paper scrapping before, I never really got into it. Digital provides the perfect outlet for my creativity, without the mess! Only 7 short months later, I'm completely hooked! I view each page as a work of art. Not only something beautiful to look at, scrapping allows me to share my photos, memories, and legacy with the world!

She has come up with such a fun idea....a perpetual calendar. I don't know about all of you, but I have the hardest time finding a calendar in the store that suits all of my family activities too.  I was so excited when Amy came up with this idea!  Here is a look at her fantastic project:

Perpetual_calendar

The daily portion is completely digital. She designed it in Photoshop, then simply printed and cut it out. Each "week" is a 3"x8" strip that holds the dates. She used Lauren Reid's Gridlock paper, Amber Clegg's date stamps, Two Sisters beauty marks, and Lisa Whitney's circle brush. She adjusted the opacity of all the elements to make them lighter, so that when you write your appointments you can see them easily. These are just clipped onto the top of a sheet of 12x12 Daisy D's Boston Common Scroll paper.   She added the month by making folded tabs out of Dianne Rigdon's beautiful Fall 2 Remember papers. She printed out the paper (resized to 8x8) and cut it into strips. She stamped the name of each month, and stitched them down with her sewing machine. She added grommets and a ribbon to hold them closed. She then just unfolds the current month from underneath the ribbon.  She decorated the whole thing with circles cut from the same Fall 2 Remember paper, one of Lisa Whitney's Artsy Fartsy papers, and some old courthouse journal papers she had in her stash. She roughed up the edges of the circles, then sewed them down with some buttons. A Heidi Swapp "today" stamp seemed appropriate in the corner, then added the year with American Craft's thickers alpha. They are just stickers, so she can peel them off and replace them with 2008 next year.
Here is a look at Jenn's cute "chore chart" she created:

Jenns_project

Here is a look at Linda's wonderful calendar idea:

Here is a look at my calendar...please be sure to check out the hybrid gallery for all the details.

Calendar

Thank you again, Amy....such a wonderful idea!

Please post your perpetual calendar/chart in the hybrid gallery before Sunday, June 24th, and I'll send you a little Summer goodie from the talented Jomi....you will love it!  If you have any questions, or need help with your project, please contact Jenn, Linda or myself, and we would be happy to help you.

Happy scrapping!
